Pentax K-5

Salam.

The all new Pentax K-5 just made out of the box and being reviewed by people all around the world. Apparently a friend of mine just got this camera so I want to check out what this camera got that he bought one.

Key features:

- 16.3MP CMOS sensor
- ISO sensitivity span of 80 - 51,200 (equivalent)
- 1080p HD movie mode
- Limited in-camera movie editing functionality
- Socket for external microphone input
- Triple-axis sensor-based shake reduction (horizontal, vertical and rotational correction)
- New SAFOX IX 11-point AF system (improved over the K-7)
- Support for older Pentax lenses with manual aperture rings
- Magnesium alloy body shell
- Improved handheld HDR function (JPEG mode only)
- Continuous shooting up to 7fps
- 100% viewfinder coverage (0.92x magnification)
- Choice of PEF or DNG RAW files
- 3", 921k pixel LCD screen

The specs are quite the same with Nikon D90, Canon 50D and Sony A580. However the 100% viewfinder coverage and the support of older lenses really make it quite worthy.

Advantages:

- Good detail and dynamic range (even better in RAW)
- Exceptionally low shadow noise in RAW files at low ISO
- One of the best APS-C DSLR in terms of high ISO image quality
- Very good build quality and handling
- Maximum ISO of 51,200 at full resolution
- Excellent burst depth in RAW mode (with firmware 1.0.1)
- 1080p HD video mode with basic editing built-in
- Useful electronic level and composition adjustment functions
- Comprehensive customization options including adjustable NR for each ISO
- Large, bright viewfinder with 100% coverage
- Fast contrast detect Auto Focus in Live View
- Versatile auto ISO function

Disadvantage:

- AF system not as versatile as Nikon D7000 (which is a cheaper camera)
- Lockable exposure mode dial can be annoying
- No dedicated movie shooting button
- No AF during movie shooting
- Poorly implemented live histogram in live view/manual exposure mode
- No 'live' aperture control during movie shooting
- Shadow Correction mode doesn't take full advantage of K-5's sensor
- Jaggies can be a problem along very fine diagonal lines

The disadvantage of this camera really shows off its weaknesses especially when compared to cheaper cameras. I'm not seduced by this camera as the price doesn't really reflects it specs. However, if you have the money and got nothing else to do, get this one. You can be the most different person when your friends are using Canon and Nikon while you are holding an artifact.

I hope the price will drop if it wants to stay in the market. Or else, goodbye.

Snow in Plymouth

Salam.

It's rare for Plymouth to experience snow but since the last two years, it is like a dream comes true.

A shot that was featured in my Daily Photo #23 showed the second day of snow in Plymouth. But it was washed away by the sun's ray in the morning.

However, at 0135 today, snow starts pouring nonstop. I got some footage as well as some shots from my window. The time for the picture below is 0306.

It is expected to be more snow in several hours, so I keep myself awake to get a shot at the scene.

At 0355, the snow starts filling Plymouth again. It's the second wave after the first one at 0135. Here's the shot of it.

As of 0400, snow still continues to pour and I assume that this will continue until sunrise.

Now is 0900 and we can see the result of the downpour. Here is a shot at 0900.

And not to forget the video report of the snow.

That's all for now, thanks for watching.

Salam.

I got this Wii Mario Kart Mini Remote Control Car from Toys R'us for £15. And here's a video review of it.

Key features:
- 2 channel band
- 6 directions
- 2 speed
- Very small
- Design is very accurate. Final touch is awesome.
- Runs on the LR44 batteries which will last longer than other mini remote control cars

I don't review toys but this time is an exception because I really like this car. And I hope you do too.

Thanks for watching my video and reading my post.

LG Optimus 2X - Double the Speed, Double the Fun

Salam.

The wait for the great smartphone is over. I present you. LG Optimus 2X! The first dual-core Tegra 2 smartphone running at 1GHz! This phone have proven itself worthy by being faster than Apple iPhone 4 and HTC Desire HD.

What Nexus S Lacks

Salam.

The Google Nexus S made by Samsung is possibly one of the best smartphone that will be coming out in a few weeks. But some crazy and stupid limitation caused it to become one of the worthless piece of crap, you wish you have the Nexus One.

The specs is nearly the same as the Samsung Galaxy S but the price is £150 more plus you won't be getting microSD card support. What? You made billions selling phones but you forgot the microSD? And that's not all. It also lacks HD recording! All high-end smartphones have HD recording but not the Nexus S? You should have named it the NEXUS ASS rather than Nexus S.

Seriously, this is one of the phones you should avoid in the time being until it has proven itself worthy.

Until next time. Thanks for reading.

Tamron 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC PZD Lens

Salam.

On the 9th of December 2010 marks the 60th anniversary for Tamron Corporation, the world leading optical company. The lens Tamron 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC PZD Lens celebrate the 60th birthday of Tamron.

Key features of the lens are as follows:

1. Highest zoom range (15x optical zoom) together with VC (Vibration Compensation) Technology incorporated.

2. Compact and easy to carry with 67mm diameter filter.

3. New PZD (Piezo Drive) which works the same as Canon's USM (Ultrasonic Motor) and Nikon's SWM (Silent Wave Motor).

4. Minimum focusing distance of 0.49m and maximum magnification ratio of 1:3.8.

5. Di II (Digitally integrated Design) = Designed exclusively for DSLR with APS-C sensor and not suitable for full frame or 35mm DSLR.

In my opinion, this is one of a kind lens which is very suitable for daily photography where changing lens is a burden for the user. Using this lens will allow user to get access to wide and telephoto without worrying about the quality of the image as it has VC and PZD. For people who are always on the go, this lens will suit them perfectly.

The lens might be multi-purpose but it will not fulfill the specific criteria of special photography needs such as macro and low-light condition.

Mobile Phone Tripod

Salam.

I got my Mobile Phone Tripod and it cost me £4 on eBay. It will be around RM20 in Malaysia. Here is a video review of it.

It does help you in recording videos on your mobile if you are a hardcore mobile user. It does a great job recording and taking pictures but the design can be a lot better to provide better stability.

Nexus S will have Super Clear LCD

Salam.

Samsung's Nexus S will abandon their SuperAMOLED in exchange for Super Clear LCD in most territories. Russia is the first to confirm this.

This is due to the limited supply of SuperAMOLED screen but you have nothing to fear. Super Clear LCD does prove itself worthy so even without the SuperAMOLED, Nexus S will be just fine.

Samsung Gloria - Tablet with Keyboard?

Salam.

Samsung planning on the 10" tablet codename 'Gloria' with slide out QWERTY keyboard and it does give me the creeps. Not just that, they will make it run Windows 7 for more user-friendly experience.

Google Nexus S

Salam.

The new Google smartphone running Android 2.3 Gingerbread made its way up to the net yesterday. Manufactured by Samsung, the Nexus S is nearly similiar to the Samsung Galaxy S in terms of specs. 4" SuperAMOLED capacitive touchscreen, embedded within a curved glass and protected with anti-fingerprint coating are some of the difference it had compared to the Galaxy S.

The Nexus S runs on the 1GHz Hummingbird processor, 512MB of RAM and 16GB of internal memory. It will be available in the UK from Carphone Warehouse at 650 euros.

Antennagate: HTC?

Salam.

After the Apple iPhone 4, the HTC HD7 is the next one to suffer from signal problem.

However, it is not that bad compared to the former as professionals only manage to suffer from the loss of 2 bars of signals out of five. Compared to iPhone 4, HD7 is quite powerful.

However, HTC and David Balmer did not go around the world and blame other phone makers such as Nokia or Samsung due to antennagate. Only Steve Jobs is stupid enough to go beating around the bush.

Have no fear, Windows Phone 7 is safe from antennagate compared to iPhone 4.

Canon Speedlite 420EX

Salam.

Yesterday I got a flash unit for my DSLR which is the Canon Speedlite 420EX. Here's a video review of it.

As you can see, it doesn't comes boxed but it is in a very good condition. I hardly believe the condition because it's like buying it first hand.

The guide number for this flash is 42 (ISO100) and the main disadvantage is the ability to control the power. However, it still gives enough lighting for my daily usage as it can tilt and swivel to bounce the light.

That's all for now. Thanks for watching my video.

Nokia N87 Prototype

Salam.

The successor to the Nokia N86, the N87 is a slider which packs with just a single punch.

A 12MP camera with xenon flash is the only feature worth looking at the phone. It still runs on the old Symbian S60 3rd edition.

This was leaked off eBay but somehow the seller remove the listing. How he get his hands on the prototype? Don't ask me.

Hopefully the Finnish phone maker will make better phones out of the prototype which looks quite 'ugly'.

LG Star Tegra - The Real iPhone Killer

Salam.

Recently this phone is gaining popularity through leak photos of it circulating around the net. Why? Because this phone is FASTER THAN IPHONE 4!

Yeah. You got it. From the leak photos, we can see that it supports HDMI, equipped with 8MP camera with LED flash and running Android 2.2 Froyo. Rumour has it that it will be getting Android 2.3 Gingerbread out-of-the-box.

From the picture above, you can see it surpasses the Nexus One in terms of speed. FYI, Nexus One is the fastest smartphone in terms of GPU processing but its not that smooth due to lack of RAM. But not the LG Star Tegra.

Let's wait for its debut anytime soon because its a super-great christmas gift.

The next Symbian 3 member is the Nokia X7-00 after the N8. The processor, graphic and RAM are the same with N8. However, the four speakers on each corners of the phone is something worth looking.

Sony PSP Phone on 9th December?

This was taken from Sony Ericsson France and the phone logo does give us a hint about PSP Phone.

Lets hope and pray super hard about the release.
